The jeep was invented by American armed forces as a "general purpose" (G.P., hence "jeep") automobile in World War II.

Actually, I was watching a discovery channel documentary that said that the word jeep most likely did not come from the term "general purpose." The documentary claimed that the term was probably derived from the character in Popeye known as "the Jeep" who could teleport and go through walls. The vehicle was compared to the cartoon character by GIs because it too could seemingly travel through any obstacles on the roads and battlefield terrains. Wish I could remember the name of the documentary so you could verify this.
