The term "lynching" dates back to Virginia in the
1780s, and may refer to either one of two men -
Captain William Lynch of Pittsylvania County or
Colonel James Lynch of Bedford County. Both men
attempted to bring law and order where none existed. The term was only applied to mob rule
later. Originally it denoted punishment less
dramatic than a hanging. Usually the culprit was
given a damned good thrashing!!
