Is it true that the three notes of the NBC theme are G, E and C for the General Electric Company that owned it once?

Question #39462. Asked by tjoebigham. (Oct 04 03 6:46 AM)

No it is not...this rumour was started by Birkenshaw at the BBC, who had heard American programmes on the radio over short waves from the General Electric stations. Birkenshaw thought that the chimes were provided by General Electric themselves and so spoke about the G - E - C notes being ingeniously from them but he did not know that they actually came from NBC and not General Electric, which Birkenshaw took a lot of convincing to realise this.
