Wasn't George Custer was a Lt. Colonel at the time of his death?

Don't want to be pedantic about this question.
One site I looked up about Custer inferred that he
was a Lieutenant-Colonel as cohocola said. Another
site gave his rank as General. I'm wondering if
(perhaps) he received some kind of unofficial promotion. The correct answer to the question
according to militaryhistory.com is Edward Canby.
    Perhaps someone can enlighten me?

Custer was a Brevet General during the Civil War, meaning it was a temporary war-time promotion, not commissioned by Congress

The question doesn't rule out generals killed by people from India. Has that ever happened?
