General Santa Anna's wooden leg is part of the Illinois State Military Museum's collection. The leg is physically located on the second floor of The Adjudant General's (TAG) building on Camp Lincoln, Springfield, Illinois. In the past the following sites had information on Santa Anna's prosthetic leg, however they do not appear to be available as of April, 2002. A picture of the prosthetic leg and a short history are available online at the Illinois National Guard Website ( http://www.il.ngb.army.mil/museum2/santa.htm).

Shot to Pieces is the story of the life and times of Union General "Iron Man" William F. Bartlett during the American Civil War. William Bartlett was regarded as an amazing man during the war but died shortly after from illness and never received much lasting national fame. Shot five times, having a leg amputated and being thrown in an enemy prison places his story among the unique.
Bartlett joined the war at the beginning in 1861 when he left Harvard University to form his own Massachusetts company. His first conflict was at the disastrous Union defeat at Ball’s Bluff in 1861 where his regiment crossed the Potomac river into a mass of Confederate troops. A deadly battle ensued and the Confederates cut them to pieces. Bartlett showed a coolness under fire as he survived the battle and led his surviving men to safety by escaping up river in a boat.
During a battle in the 1862 Peninsula campaign he was caught spying on the enemy when a Southern sniper shot him through the knee. Bartlett was rescued but surgeons had to amputate his leg.
Given a wooden leg, Bartlett refused to sit out the war and instead began drilling recruits back in Massachusetts. He was famous for his ability to remove his fake leg while leading drill routines.
