    Why does California seem to have so many cities that begin with 'San?'

    		Probably the combination of the Spanish and catholic influence. The great reverence to saints in catholicism (san in Spanish) means many more places are named after them, and of course you have the Spanish influence on California from history, as in Central and South America.

    		Because we live by Mexico I think.
    San-sustantivo masculino(apocope de santo) mean saint.

    		The Spanish always names their Missions after saints, the towns took on the name of their Mission.

    		Spain also has lots of towns starting in San.

    		And Britain likewise has many places named after saints - St. Andrews, St. Neots, St. Asaph, St. Albans etc. California is no different from anywhere else in having places named after saints. And France - St. Etienne, St. Denis, St. Claud. I could go on ... and on...
