What is the difference between an undertaker and a funeral director?

Question #39945. Asked by Valf. (Oct 16 03 12:57 PM)

This is only a guess so please treat it as such; but I think an undertaker is the person who actually does the body preparation. This involves considerable more than just embalming, especially if the funeral is to be "open casket".
They set and or style the hair, put on make-up, and such; anything to make the "dear departed" look less dead.
A Funeral Director (again, remember I'm guessing here) would possibly be the person who meets with the relatives, arranges the funeral, transportation of the body and live folks to the cemetary, etc. In other words, the P R guy.
