Is it true that hydra reproduce sexually when the environment is not suited for them or they are stressed?

Hydra appear to reproduce sexually in the later summer months when conditions for asexual reproduction are not optimal.
I don't know if conditions "not suited for them" would mean sexual reproduction, because typically if the environment is specifically not suitable, the organism will not survive.
