Although she rejected the title "the great" during her lifetime, she was given this name for all the advances she made in a country that was not her own, being born in Germany. Truly a great woman.

Catherine was considered 'great' because of the advances of cultural and scientific institutions in Russia during her reign. Under her rule the Hermitage museum was opened, the Russian Academy of Sciences was expanded and the Crimea was finally seized from the Tartars.
