It is correct that Sgt Elijah Churchill was the first recipient of the Badge of Military Merit, which is the precursor to the Purple Heart. But the Purple Heart medal wasn't established until 1932. The first recipient is NOT Sgt Elijah Churchill. Oct 24 03, 5:32 PM
