In the Grand National at Aintree, a horse called "The Pie" was first past the post but was disqualified. Why and who was the jockey?

    Question #40359. Asked by supermary345.

A fictional account of a young girl training the winner of the Grand National by Enid Bagnold was made into a film 'National Velvet' starring the young Elizabeth Taylor as the heroine, Violet Brown.

Wasn't her name Velvet? Hence the book title?

I found another site with "Violet Brown."

    PIE, THE
Race horse belonging to Velvet in the 1944 movie National Velvet. The name of the race horse owned by Violet Brown in the book National Velvet. Pi or Pie is short for Piebald. http://www.searchforsales.com/trivia/answers/encyclopedia-p.html

McG - I'm as certain as I can be that the girl in the book was actually called Velvet. Her sisters had unusual names too, but I haven't got a copy of the book to verify and I haven't been able to find a site with enough information either. But you are right about the Pie being short for The Piebald. That was another unusual feature of the race, a piebald horse winning.

The sisters names were Edwina, Meredith, and Malvolia. I came across those while trying to find any concrete evidence for 'Violet' and thought Malvolia sure was an odd name! Maybe they were thinking of Elizabeth Taylor's gorgeous violet eyes. http://www.book-reviews.info/Classics_Book_Reviews/0899663591.shtml

In the 1960 film version (not the 1944 one starring Elizabeth Taylor) the horse was called KING !

In "International Velvet" (the 1978 remake with Tatum O'Neal "duplicating" the story) her aunt was "Velvet Brown" played by Nanette Newman, in the grown-up role Elizabeth Taylor played as the child in "National Velvet."
