    Who was George Mallory, and what was his mystery?

    		Wasn't he a mountaineer who, in attempting to conquer Everest, disappeared and the mystery surrounds what happened to him? I THINK all this took place in the late 1920s.

    		Yes SS - um shady - his body was actually found near the summit in 1999...

    		It was also Mallory who gave the famous answer (often mistakenly attributed to Hillary) when asked why he wanted to climb Everest - "Because it is there"
