I think he lost his way, took the wrong road and his career ended up in a cul de sac with no place to go.
Although vocally streets ahead of many others at the time and on the crescent of success, life in fast lane took its toll. His drive waned after an unsuccesful European tour. Whilst in Germany he was stopped for speeding and received an auto ban, and he returned very strassed. He rued his French trip, and lost direction not being able to see the trees for the boulevards.
This brought his journey full circle, fair and square to a close and he retired to his gardens!

I quite liked his 1998 hit "Walk Like A Panther" with the All Seeing I which scraped into the top ten. Clearly I have no taste either, Linus!
