I can only mention one I know to be very short, as far as carrying vehicles (as passenger ferries across rivers can be row boats across creeks a few yards wide and may not be recorded officially). This is a proper chain driven ship carrying HGV's, passengers and cars the 400 yards from Poole to Studland in Dorset UK. The alternative land-based route is a 25 mile return trip. There is one in Sri Lanka across part of a inland lagoon from the main road (dust track) to the hotel situated the other side of a narrow stretch of water. It is only about 50 feet (15m) wide and the ferry that crosses it is 20 feet (6m) in length. All guests, luggage, staff, deliveries etc all use it. Oct 29 03, 6:42 AM
