When buying a DVD player what does "multi regions" mean?

The world is divided into several regions for DVD, rather like videos being in different formats. DVDs for the American market will not work on the machines for the British/Euorpean market and so on. Some machines are able to play all DVDs.

Different DVDs will only play on certain 'region' DVD players.
Region 0 is all
Region 1 is USA + Canada
Region 2 is Uk + Europe
I'm not sure on the rest it goes up to region 6. I think multi regions means the same as region 0.
