Ok, here it is.
Prom, short for promenade, is a dance traditionally held at the end of the school year, for Juniors and graduating Seniors. It is usually a formal dance, meant as a sort of last hurrah. The student body votes for the prom royalty. King and Queen are the male and female elected from the Senior class, Prince and Princess are the male and female elected from the Junior class.
Homecoming is similar. However, it is linked with another event, usually in mid fall. This is usually a football (American, that is,) game. Also, while Prom is usually limited to High School, Homecoming is very much also a college and university tradition. It is called Homecoming because traditionally school alumni return for this game (They come home, you see,) and stay for the dance that follows. As with Prom, the dance is usually formal. These days, however, the formal Homecoming dance is becoming more and more limited to universities and colleges, and high school Homecoming dances are a more casual affair. The Homecoming dance is not limited to Junior and Senior classes; Freshmen and Sophomores are invited as well. As with Prom, the royalty is elected by the student body, King and Queen from the Senior class and Prince and Princess from the Junior class. Depending on the school, there might also be royalty from the two lower classes.
