According to the New Shell Book of Firsts:
The first woman known to have competed in a horse race was 22-year-old Alicia Meynell, the mistress of Colonel Thornton, who rode the Colonel’s horse Vingarillo against Captain William Flint over a 4-mile course at York on August 25, 1804. Miss Meynell competed again at the York August Meeting of August 1805, winning two races.
The first woman jockey licensed to ride as a professional was Miss Judy Johnson, who made her debut riding Lone Gallant at Pimlico Racetrack, Baltimore on April 27, 1943.

Ms. C. Lindop wasn't the first.
Ms. Maree Lyndon rode in the Melbourne Cup in 1987.
