There's no secret to breeding a Melbourne Cup winner. The race has been won by horses bred in the purple, who went on to sire later winners, while one winner ended his career as a milk cart horse. http://www.ozeform.com/site/racing_info/MelbCup/mc_breedings.aspx?lower=1876&Upper=1890 That a horse that was, with some show of reason, called a lame pony, should win the Melbourne Cup, caused such profound surprise that when the game little fellow limped back into the weighing yard, the cheer that greeted him was one of the most half-hearted for many years at Flemington.
Press report on the 1881 Cup, won by Zulu who missed the confusion caused by a dog running onto the track during the race. http://www.nzthoroughbred.co.nz/kids_project5.htm
I can't connect Zulu with the milk cart reference, however, neither Trigger nor Senior Moments have been Melbourne Cup winners.
