Qat.
Farmers in eastern Ethiopia and other parts of the country are turning to qat and other crops to counteract the devastating slide in world coffee prices, which are at 30-year lows. Ethiopia relies on coffee exports for between 60-65 percent of its foreign exchange earnings.
Zenebe Woldu, a researcher with Ethiopia's Institute of Biodiversity Conservation and Research said in a study published in Ethiopian newspapers that the shift to grow qat in Africa's third largest coffee exporter, behind Ivory Coast and Uganda, threatens to slash output in the eastern Haraghe region.
Chewing qat, a stimulant with the qualities of a mild amphetamine, is a daily ritual for men in Somalia, Djibouti, Yemen and parts of northeast Kenya, a major qat-growing centre.
