Primarily to protect their feet. Initially it was to protect from chips and cracks from hitting rocks, but with the advent of concrete and other paving, a horse's feet became more vulnerable still.
Consider, if you will, a dog. The nails and foot pads of a dog who is exclusively an indoor dog will be soft and the nails will need clipping more often. Those of a dog who gets out for frequent walks on pavement will be course and the nails will wear down. The same applies for horse hooves. Sometimes this can be quite dangerous or painful.
Shoes also help heal broken hooves. Like getting a split fingernail, horses can split hooves, and the shoe can act as a sort of splint to help the hoof heal.
Wild horses, of coures, don't wear shoes. While split hooves aren't all that dangerous, they can be painful and irritating, like a hangnail. They also can be dangerous if the wound is deep and gets infected. However, domestic horses obviously have a different work load than wild horses.
