Canada's Head of State is the Queen, represented by the Governor General. The Governor General is appointed by the Queen on the advice of Canada’s Prime Minister.
The Governor General’s main role is to represent the Crown in Canada.
In addition to granting Royal Assent to all bills passed by the House of Commons and the Senate, the Governor General reads the Speech from the Throne which opens Parliament and, on the advice of the Prime Minister, dissolves Parliament before elections.
The Governor General also:
is Commander-in-Chief of the Canadian Forces,
represents Canada in foreign countries and receives foreign leaders visiting Canada,
visits hospitals and schools, participates in community events and festivals and promotes a sense of belonging and pride among Canadians,
presents honours, such as the Order of Canada, to citizens who, through an exceptional contribution or achievement, have made a difference to our country. http://pm.gc.ca/default.asp?Language=E&Page=thecanadiangovernment&Sub=GovernorGeneral http://pm.gc.ca/default.asp?Language=E&Page=theprimeminister&Sub=RoleofthePM
