Wilmer McLean, about the American Civil War (or War between the States).
Mr McLean was living at Manassas when the first battle of the war was fought there: he moved to Appomattox, where the Confederate forces finally surrendered.

Very good TabbyTom, that's the right answer.
McLean's property was part of the 1st Manassas battlefield--hense his comment that it began in his backyard.
After McLean moved to Appomattox, to keep his family away from the war, it caught up with him again. His house (more specifically the parlor of his home)was the location where Grant met with Lee to accept the Confederate surrender--which explains the second half of his statement.

This is a quiz about the sixth book by Louise Rennison about Georgia Nicolson. Some of the questions may be harder if you read the US version, as I used the UK one for references. It may be quite challenging!
