Hattie McDaniel was the first African American to win an Oscar for acting. It was for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Mammy in "Gone with the Wind."

Sidney Poitier was next, with a Best Actor Oscar for "Lilies of the Field."

Louis Gossett, Jr. - 1982 Best Supporting Actor in "Officer and a Gentleman."

Denzel Washington - Best Supporting Actor in 1989's "Glory", and Best Actor in 2002 for "Training Day."

Whoopie Goldbeg - Best Supporting Actress for "Ghost" in 1990

Cuba Gooding, Jr. - 1996's Best Supporting Actor for "Jerry McGuire."

And Hally Berry in 2002 for Best Actress in "Monster's Ball."

I think that makes the total 7.
