    		IMDB says 53

    British TV series are often made in 13 episodes per series (per annum) and it did run from 1975 to 1978 so 52 in total might make sense.
    Maybe there was a pilot episode/christmas episode/farwell episode that makes it 53 !

    		There were four series of "The Sweeney". 13 episodes in each of the first three and 14 in the last. But there was also a pilot episode, which makes the total number of episodes 54.
