    Several sites indicate that Hubble discovered in the 1920s that the universe was expanding, but Russian-American physicist George Gamow modified Lemaître's theory of the primeval atom into what is known as the "Big Bang" theory of the origin of the universe in 1948.

    Linus is correct but the first astronomer to use the term (in a disparaging context) was Fred Hoyle, who proposed the conflicting Steady State theory. Graves are made for rolling in!

    It was originally proposed by Georges Lemaitre, but it was modified by Hubble and others...

    The Big Bang Theory got its name through a joke, though. Hubble, I believe, was announcing the idea during some meeting and his competitor thought it was crazy. He said some comment in reference of a big bang, and the name just stuck...
