George Washington took command of the Continental Army in 1775, and retained the post until the end of the American War of Independence in 1781.
Andrew Jackson was a Major General in 1814 and won the Battle of New Orleans.
Zachary Taylor was a Brigadier-General following his victory over the Seminole in 1837.
Ulysses Simpson Grant was made a full General in 1866, following his successes in the American Civil War.
Rutherford Birchard Hayes reached the rank of Major-General during the Civil War.
Benjamin Harrison rose to Brigadier-General during the Civil War.
Dwight David Eisenhower was placed in command of the invasion of North Africa in 1942, and made Supreme Allied Commander for the invasion of Europe in 1944.
