Andrew Jackson was a Major General in 1814 and won the Battle of New Orleans. Zachary Taylor was a Brigadier-General following his victory over the Seminole in 1837. Ulysses Simpson Grant was made a full General in 1866, following his successes in the American Civil War. Rutherford Birchard Hayes reached the rank of Major-General during the Civil War. Benjamin Harrison rose to Brigadier-General during the Civil War.
