Mambas, Dendroaspis, are venomous African snakes in the same family, Elapidae, as the cobras. They are quick-moving, slender snakes with narrow heads and very large eyes. The four or five species are typically arboreal and large in size, averaging between 1.5 and 2.2 m (5 to 7.25 ft) in length; the black mamba, D. polylepis, is the largest poisonous snake in Africa, reaching a length of 4.27 m (14 ft). Because they may be found on low-lying branches, can move vigorously and rapidly, can crawl or strike with the head held high, and possess an extremely potent venom, mambas are the most feared snakes in Africa.
