That is correct bloomsby, but the thermometers I use in my class have a substance in it with the color of mercury, but they are suppose to be non-mercury. Do you know what that could be?

New non-mercury thermometers use a variety of substances, including mineral spirits and organic liquids (the formula of which is not mentioned on the websites,). I assume that the exact formulas of the various organic, non-toxic and/or biodegradable liquids used vary from manufacturer to manufacturer and are undisclosed as a matter of patent.
