My source was Bulfinch's Mythology. According to Bulfinch's, Viviane was the Lady of the Lake. Thomas Bulfinch acquired his information from a variety of sources, including a vast array of literature from the regions. In one passage by Matthew Arnold, quoted in Bulfinch's, the Lady of the Lake is also called Vivian.
This explains a lot:

Contrary to the '98 movie with Sam Neill, Merlin and Nimue's relationship was not so mutual and blissful. Nimue made Merlin promise that he would not use magic to lie with her. In short she played hard to get until Merlin doomed himself. His end varies according to the version including insanity, incarceration in a cave or turned into a beetle.
Nimue is also identified with Viviane, lady of the lake, Niniane, Nyneve, and other variations.
