Correct, Major. English is an official language of 48 countries, and is the sole official language of 32 of those countries. It is not the official language of either the U.S. or the U.K.

English has become the international language. Half the business meetings conducted on the European continent are conducted in English. Over 80% of the information stored in the world's computers is written in English. English is the official language of aviation, so that when an Italian airliner flies from Naples to Milan, pilots and air traffic controllers communicate in English. English has grown from a language spoken on a single European island to become the language of the global economy.

What is the official language of the UK?

UK apparently has no official language

I think that's right UberBabe. Probably a consequence of there being no constitution etc in the UK.
However lots of documents for official purposes are required to be in English or Welsh (or maybe Gaelic in Scotland) or to be accompanied by a translation into one of those languages. This is true of documents going to court, the Land Registry, company registration documents etc.

The UK has a constitution. But not a written one. English is the "other official language" of the Republic of Ireland.

Has the UK ever considered making English the official language? In the U.S. there has been an ongoing debate about making English our official language. Supporters say that such a move would unite us as a nation; detractors feel it amounts to racism against hispanics, the fastest-growing demographic in the U.S.

You're right of course Gnomon and I expressed myself badly (I did pass a constitutional law exam, honestly, though it was a long time ago!)

Guess That Language!

I am always fascinated by seeing the same text in a lot of languages. I have chosen a quote from the Bible, the Golden Rule, Matthew 7:12 - "do unto others what you would have them do unto you". Now tell me which language it is in.
