I heard about a movie where in the final scene a man is condemned to hang near a river, but the rope breaks and he is swept downriver to freedom. We see him eventually run to his house and into the arms of his wife. In the last shot, however, we realize that this was just the condemned man's dream, as we see him hanging from the gallows. Does anyone know the title of this movie?

I think this is the short film “Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge,” directed by Robert Enrico and based on a short story by Ambrose Bierce.

I know it as Incident at Owl Creek - and you've given away the ending! Fantastic film of only half an hour or less.
It was written as a short story by the same man who wrote the Red Badge of Courage.
