    Question #41264. Hamlet. asks:

In American Football, what is the little known controversy concerning the 1925 Pottsville Maroons?

    Stew54

Didn't they get cheated out of being NFL champions because they had played an exhibition match in someone else's stadium or something. There was an article about them in The Economist recently.

In 1925 the Pottsville (PA) Maroons, in their first season in the NFL, beat the Cardinals for the championship. The following week, they beat Notre Dame, the country's best college team, in a game played at Shibe Park, home of the NFL Yellow Jackets. The Yellow Jackets were bitter rivals of the Maroons, so they protested that the Maroons should not have played in their park. The NFL agreed, and the Maroons were stripped of their championship.
