Which keyboard character (not function button, but only those found on a typewriter) has no official function on a computer?

Question #41358. Asked by satguru. (Nov 20 03 4:38 PM)

    robboy

One of mine has a caret key, although the other two do not. I don't see this anywhere on a computer keyboard.

I will give the answer Saturday if requested, and then ask why it is used at all, as I don't actually know that bit.

Sorry Hamlet, I had a rather busy day Saturday, and couldn't get to the computer.
The answer is (unless anyone can prove me wrong- I can see Mibmob champing at the bit...)
    The underline character_
As electronic VDU based machinery only accepts one character per space, it is impossible to use an underline in its only official capacity and need to use the option function instead.
People do use it for weird email punctuation etc., but it really has no need to be there, as I doubt we'd miss it if it was replaced with something more used but absent, like a smiley face.
