Which 1960s UK number one hit single was based on a rugby song and who was the guest vocalist?

Question #41365. Asked by gmackematix. (Nov 20 03 9:03 PM)

"Lily the Pink" by The Scaffold, is based on the rugby song called "Lydia Pinkham". The guest vocalist was probably Paul McCartney's brother, Mike, who used the pseudonym Mike McGear for this single.

It was No. 1 in Dec 1968 and again in Jan 1969.

Yay, gtho4, for the hard bit, the song. Mike McGear was a regular member of The Scaffold so is not the guest vocalist I am looking for. You are right about Mike beng Paul's brother though and Paul also produced "Lily the Pink".

    Elton John

"Lily The Pink" was No. 1 the following Christmas. The song features Jack Bruce (Cream) and Graham Nash (The Hollies) and a young Elton John (then Reg Dwight) on backing vocals. Mike had to borrow Ringo Starr's bass drum to get the final thump-thump-thump sound right.

Jack Bruce played the bass. Keith Moon was also there, according to this site: http://www002.upp.so-net.ne.jp/uto-pia/scaffold/scaffold.html">www002.upp.so-ney.ne.jp

A definite yay, gtoh4, as that's more than I knew! I knew Graham Nash of the Hollies joined in the verse about Jennifer Eccles as the name was taken from one of their songs.
