Does anyone know what the Brit awards were previously called before they were called the Brit awards?

I remember when they were called the BPI (British Phonographic Industry) Awards. I believe they started calling them the 'Brits' sometime during the eighties.

The awards have their origins in 1977's Britannia Awards, which celebrated 100 years of recorded sound.

They were renamed the Brit Awards in 1989.
