There may be many reasons for snoring, but it is always caused by some kind of blockage in the breathing passages.
The snoring sound is caused when the tissues lining the air passages vibrate or flap. Even louder snoring noises are caused when the roof of the mouth also start to flap.
The sound is loud, it can reach 90db, which is actually over the loudness considered save for your hearing, louder than screaming.
The blockages in the breathing passages may be caused by narrowing of the nasal passage. Regular cold will cause many people to snore. Asthma may do the same. Tension in the muscles around the nasal. Or an allergy.
Anything that narrows the nasal passage will cause irregular airflow in the breathing passages and will add to the regular vibration of the soft palate.
The tongue can fall back in throat blocking the airway causing snoring sound. This is the reason most people snore more lying on the back.. Tension in the upper throat or in the jaws will do the same. Anything that will contribute to the congestion of the airway will make snoring worse. This includes: overweight, smoking, alcohol, acid reflux from the stomach affecting the throat tissues, obesity, ageing and hormonal factors.
If snoring is loud, it is most definintely caused by more than one factor and there are many ways to treat snoring.
