Michelangelo designed the dome, and it was begun in 1546, but at his death in 1564 only the drum was completed. The work was continued under the supervision of Giacomo Vignola and Pirro Ligorio, and was finished under Giacomo della Porto in 1590.
It has a diameter of about 138 feet (42m) and is 435 feet (132.5m) high.
