"The first craft labor union (local) was that organized by Philadelphia shoemakers in 1792.
"The first union contract between employers and organized labor was effected in 1799 by the Federal society of Journeymen Cordwainers (shoemakers) of Philadelphia, Pa. After a strike of ten weeks their employers acceded to their demands."
