Why does February have "28 days clear and 29 in each leap year" while other months have 30 or 31, and as a corollary, is the year 2100 a leap year?

Question #41767. Asked by DogRL. (Nov 30 03 6:21 AM)

    Hamlet.

The year is 365 1/4 light days a years - so every four years there is an extra day, this is given to 28 day Febraury to make it 29 days...

The rule is that years at the end of a century must be divisible by 400 in order for them to be leap years. Hence, the year 2000 was a leap year and 2100 will not be.

February used to be the last month of the Roman calendar. For this reason it was the one that suffered tinkering when Julius Caesar's astronomer Sosigenes created the Julian calendar to account for leap years. Whwn Augustus Caesar renamed the month following Julius's (July) after himself he pinched a day from the end of the year to give his month the same number of days as July (i.e. 31), thus shortening February.

Sondheim is wrong. if 2000 was a leap year then 2100 will be one as well. 25*4= 100 thus 2100. and u divide the year by 4. if it is a whole number then it is a leap year. 2100/4= 525.

Sondheim is right - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leap_year
    2100/400=5.25
