For what specific work did Einstein receive a Noble Prize, and why not for any other of his specific work?

Question #41799. Asked by Hamlet.. (Nov 30 03 10:09 PM)

I think it was in 1921 for his work on Brownian motion rather than his more controversial work on special (1905) and general (1915) relativity. But someone will no doubt correct me if I'm wrong.

He won the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics for..."Services to Theoretical Physics and his discovery of the Law of Photo-Electric Effect."
    Whatever that means!!

The law of the Photoelectric Effect quantified the current produced in certain metals by the action of light. It is nothing to do with Brownian motion which is the zigzagging motion of gas molecules which Einstein did work on, but SS's research is correct. Now Shaky mentions it, the former is what Einstein won his Nobel Prize for. Memory does let me down occasionally.

    Hamlet.

Einstein won the Nobel prize in physics in 1921 as a result of his work on the photoelectric effect (yay shady). The rules of the Nobel prize at that time said that an award had to be for experimental work, which precluded Einstein's theoretical work in Relativity. It is believed that the nobel committee rationalized Einstein's work with the photoelectric effect (which also was, for the most part, theoretical work - his true involvement with the experimental work was minimal) in order to award him a most-deserved Nobel prize.
