I once used the following question in one of my pub quizzes:
"What do the letters 'HB' stand for on a pencil?"
The answer is "Hard Black", so your answer would be softness, or rather hardness.

As well as HB, pencils can be H,2H,3H,4H,5H,6H,B,2B,3B,4B,5B,6B or F. If you really want to know about pencils there is a Pencil Museum near Borrowdale in Cumbria.
