    Why do tires have treads?

    to grip the different aeas of the road and to maintain stability, thats why it is harder to drive on ice, the treads can't grip the surface

    Also, to displace and redirect the water from between a wet road surface and the underside of the tire. Since water serves as a lubricant on a wet road surfaces, the tire would not be able to establish enough friction with the road if such a lubricant was present.
