Greenland is the largest island, Australia and Antarctica are continents. I highly recommend "Why Greenland is an Island, Australia is Not, and Japan is Up for Grabs" by Joyce Davis.

my dictionary defines island as " a piece of land surrounded by water"
Australia is an island continent.
And technically so is Antarctica.
However it is generally accepted that Greenland is the biggest island.
