Two stars born nearly 60 years apart: one a favorite leading man of the female stars of the day who moved on to light comedy then retired early; the other was in a sleeper hit that started several careers, and had amazing luck in being in some of the biggest blockbusters ever. One name for both, what is it?

Harrison Ford is the name. One was born in 1892 (died 1957) a leading man of the silent screen, very successful commercially, but noted for his reclusiveness, retired in the early 1930's. The other born 1942. I assume the sleeper hit was American Graffitti. I can't give you a site reference. This information comes from my book Who's Who in the Movies.

Great work Maggie. You were right the first time; the sleeper hit was “American Graffiti”.
Addendum: the current Harrison is another person with no middle name. Even 'tho he was credited as Harrison J. early in his career, it was only to avoid confusion with the elder Ford.
