    The Incans were very adept at trepanning, but I'm not too clear if that was the reason.

    This is something I recall the Nazis experimenting with, although I don't recall any results. It'd be hard to imagine early civilizations having a knowledge of oxygen and its effects

    The term for this is trepanning, and I recall from my study of ancient history that the Egyptians practised it.
