Is the original cheddar cheese directly related to the caves at Cheddar, England (as in the case of Roquefort)?

Not directly to the caves. There is a town in Somerset, called Cheddar, where the cheese was originally made. The caves are also nearby.

I've been reading an article about Roquefort cheese, and apparently, this type of cheese is ripened in limestone caves. The article was written several years ago, so I was wondering; is Roquefort still made in this way, or have production methods changed since then?
