In addition, Bedlam is a word to describe the institution to which London sent the insane in medieval times. The word is a corruption of Bethlehem Royal Hospital which was situated at Moorfields, and has given rise to the modern word 'bedlam' meaning chaotic disorder.
Until 1815, Bedlam was open to the public as a sort of human zoo, where visitors could pay a few pence to bait the chained inmates. In that year, the entertainment was abandoned as a new institution was built in St. George's Fields.
