In "Die Another Day" a chopper falls out of an airplane but before it hits the ground the pilot starts it up and it takes off and doesn't crash. Is this physically possible?

Theoretically the chopper would auto-gyrate making it possible for the pilot to land without starting the engine.

Actually, the blades would have to already be turning in order for the aircraft to autogyrate. I have a little over 2,000 hrs in "fling wings", and I'd think starting the aircraft would at least give a pilot a chance of getting the blades moving so he COULD freewheel.
But, then again, my name's not Bond...James Bond.
