1837 won by a horse named "The Duke"

It isn't really as simple as that.
William Lynn organised the first all-comers Aintree steeplechase in 1836.
This was won by "The Duke" ridden by Captain Becher, who also won the race in 1837.
However, the first Official Grand National, according to most listings in the 1839 race won by Lottery.
Captain Becher did run in that race but famously fell at the fence now called Becher's Brook.
Why the 1839 race is usually regarded as the official first, I don't know, but even in 1839 the race wasn't known as "The Grand Natonal".
