    Singapore is such a straitlaced city now but in the past it had a street of ill repute. What was the name of this street?

    Bugis Street, in the city-state of Singapore, was renowned internationally from the 1950s to the 1980s for its nightly gathering of transwomen, a phenomenon which made it one of Singapore's top tourist destinations during that period.

    Looking at an almost 40-year-old map of London today, I saw that there was once a short thoroughfare called "Pickle Herring Street," sort of parallel to Tooley Street.
